Dozens of Japanese hobby manufacturers began showcasing their brand new products Thursday as a major exhibition opened in the central Japanese city of Shizuoka, the hub of an area where production facilities of many toymakers are located.
Figures of popular Japanese animation and TV drama characters, as well as plastic models of the "Star Wars" movie series, are among top attractions at this year's edition of the Shizuoka Hobby Show, which runs through Sunday at the Twin Messe Shizuoka convention hall.
Organizers said 80 toymakers and other companies in the hobby industry are exhibiting as-yet-unreleased products at the four-day event opened to buyers on Thursday and Friday and to the public on the weekend.
Shizuoka Prefecture is home to a number of toymakers including Tamiya Inc. The annual exhibition attracts more than 70,000 on an average in recent years.
