Today, July 29 (Friday), the "SAKE COMPETITION" executive committee held the awards ceremony for "SAKE COMPETITION 2016," the world's largest Japanese sake competition in terms of number of entries, and announced the world's most delicious Japanese sake in five categories -- Junmai, Junmai Ginjo, Junmai Daiginjo, Ginjo, and Super Premium.

Former Japanese soccer player Hidetoshi Nakata, comedian and Akutagawa award-winning writer Naoki Matayoshi, actress Rin Takanashi, model Leena, as well as French restaurant Les Creations de Narisawa owner and chef Yoshihiro Narisawa took part in the ceremony as guest presenters, delivering the awards to the top three winning breweries in each category.

In the Junmai category, Miyagi Prefecture's Niizawa Jozoten won the first place with its "Atagonomatsu, Tokubetsu Junmai." Niizawa Jozoten's representative Mr. Niizawa said, "This result is a big surprise. I am truly delighted and grateful from the bottom of my heart to be able to continue brewing sake in the aftermath of the (2011 Great East Japan) Earthquake." Ms. Takanashi, who presented the award, offered her encouragement by saying, "Please continue to do your best in brewing fantastic Japanese sake!"

Meanwhile in the Junmai Ginjo category, the top spot went to "Katsuyama, Junmai Ginjo, Ken" of Sendai Isawake Katsuyama Shuzo in Miyagi Prefecture. After receiving the commemorative trophy from the presenter, Mr. Matayoshi, the brewery's representative Mr. Isawa said, "To be awarded two years in a row, I am elated beyond words. I believe that sake is made through teamwork, so I think this award is thanks to everyone's hard work." Matayoshi congratulated the winner by saying, "I am sorry that I am not a pretty female presenter (laughs) I am honored to be invited to this place where all your efforts have gathered. I myself is a big fan of Japanese sake so I look forward too to your rice wines from now on!"

"Aiyu, Junmai Daiginjo" by Aiyu Shuzo in Ibaraki Prefecture ranked first in the Junmai Daiginjo category. Mr. Takeda of the Industrial Technology Institute of Ibaraki Prefecture, who received the award on stage on behalf of Aiyu Shuzo, said, "It is a great surprise to win first place on the very first try in this competition. Stay tuned and you will be impressed (by Ibaraki's Japanese sake)!" Award presenter Mr. Narisawa said, "Customers looking forward to enjoy Japanese sake will arrive from around the world, so please continue your great work in brewing fantastic sake."

In the Ginjo category, "Tajima, Daiginjo" by Konotomo Shuzo was chosen as the best. The brewery's representative, Mr. Kimura, said, "I have always had high expectations as our 43-year-old energetic master brewer is always working very hard in making the sake, but I was truly surprised when it really won first place. Thank you very much." Leena, who presented the award, said, "I tried the sake just now and it was so delicious I drank three rounds. I will continue to look forward to your wonderful sake in the future."

Lastly, the results for the Super Premium category were announced. Mr. Fujimura of Raifuku Shuzo, whose "Raifuku, Choseimai, Junmai Daiginjo" took the top spot, said, "I am trembling right now as this was totally unexpected. We make sake under the motto of staying loyal to the basics and working diligently, and I believe the results have been achieved thanks to this."Award presenter Mr. Nakata said in wrapping up the event, "It is said that Japanese sake is enjoying a boom in popularity these few years, and the quality has risen immensely. This is the result of the every day hard work by countless brewers in taking up this unprecedented challenge. I hope not to let this just pass as a boom but instead to firmly spread information about Japanese sake as our culture."
