2016.10.23 | Kochi

Bentenza kabuki playhouse is a community run theatre in little Akaoka, Kochi Prefecture, Japan. Every summer, at the Ekin Festival, kabuki is performed and gruesome paintings are displayed on the street by candlelight. The festival is named after the paintings' artist, Ekin, who is famous for his kabuki folding screens produced during the end of the Edo Era (over 150 years ago). This year, Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) on the JET Programme joined the locals in putting on the kabuki performance, and discovered the love this town has for its history as well as its future.
